For a survival-conscious mind, they always think of how to prepare for a worst-case scenario. After all, this world is unpredictable and we do not know what will happen in the next few hours of our lives. This is why EDC or Every Day Carry items are becoming popular these days.


Understanding an EDC or Every Day Carry List

A good survival Every Day Carry or EDC has 2 things it needs to do well:

  1. To assist and help you in your everyday tasks
  2. To keep you alive and survive in case of an emergency

An EDC carry list is a set of particular items that you have with you at all times which can help you be prepared at a moment’s notice in order to deal with both daily scenarios and situations as well as prepped for survival in case of emergency situations.

Such items are designed to help you get back home or to a safe location or help you to survive on your own. This EDC list can be made up of a broad variety of item and tailored to your locality, lifestyle and probable threats.

Ideally, the items on your EDC or Every Day Carry list should be both small in size and number and can be carried on your person without an extra container or bag to lug around. However, there are some people who chose to carry these EDC items on a specific EDC bag.

Whatever items you chose for your EDC list, as a prepper, it is important that you focus on the most important items that are really needed for your EDC, rather than what is the most fashionable or popular in the market. I don’t mean that you don’t need a “show-off” EDC list, however, it shouldn’t be the focus.

Here are the top 10 most important EDC or Every Day Carry Items you should have for survival. Take note, however, that some of you might live in areas with certain laws that prohibit some items so you might not be able to follow this list completely:


1. Functional Knife

One of the most useful EDC items you can carry is a good, functional knife. After all, you may never know when you will find yourself in an actual survival situation. And if you have a knife with you, then you can always try to survive any threat.

Knives provide many great uses for your various activities that might come up such as chopping small woods for building fire, cutting ropes and using it as a pry bar to open something. Also, knives are not just tools to cut boxes but it is also an added layer of self-defense that can slice up attackers to get some distance away.

However, you don’t want everyone knowing that you carry a knife with you, so look for a knife that can be easily concealed.


2. Flashlight

 

Flashlights are your savior in the dark. In case you use a dark parking lot or walk through dark alleys every night to get home, then a flashlight can light your way. This EDC item is also helpful in case of a blackout.

Nowadays, there are different types of flashlights available in the market. You can find varieties from large LED flashlights which can also signal for help to small tactical flashlights that fit your palm perfectly and yet produce a powerful beam of light or acts as a self-defense tool for survival.


3. Lighter

 

Aside from lighting up your favorite cigarette sticks, lighter can prove useful in tough situations. As a prepper, it is important to always carry a fire starter with you. You never know when you will be stranded somewhere cold and dark, so a good lighters can help you start a fire to warm you up instantly.

Aside from survival situations, lighters also prove useful if you choose to go camping with your family or friends. You can easily create a warm bonfire or campfire at night with this helpful tool in your hand.


4. Cell phone

 

In today’s technological era, mobile phones or cell phones will always take an important space in anyone’s pocket.

A smartphone is really, REALLY handy to have in your everyday life since you can get all sorts of helpful and useful apps to keep your life in order. You can easily connect on the internet as long as you have signal and look up various things that can help you with work or studies.

However, smartphones or mobile phones are not just that. Due to technological advancements, phones are also helpful when it comes to survival situations. Advancements such as GPS tracking, maps or compass can help you find your way when lost. Also, it can store survival books for plant or medical references.

In most cases, a cell phone can save your life in emergency situations. You can call 911 after an incident or accident or establish a communication to close friends or families to aid you in uncalled situations.

However, it is important to know that cell phones will not always work out perfectly especially during a disaster scenario. But, they are the best option you can have, so you should always carry one.


5. Pens

 

 

Pens are actually helpful in your everyday life. From instant signing of papers to last-minute doodling or taking down notes on an emergency meeting, pens can help you write things down. However, because of the increasing popularity of EDC items for survival situations, pens had also undergone modern modifications in order to serve their master more.

There’s an ordinary pen for writing and doodling, then there are tactical pens.

A tactical pen is a high-grade metal pen which can work as an ordinary pen and as a self-defense tool or aid in breaking glass for emergency situations. Tactical pens are upgrades to meet your daily work writing needs as well as addressing rare, high consequence situations of defending yourself from threats and attackers.

Also, ordinary pens do not work when wet or when writing in an upward direction. There are some models of tactical pens, however, that can write in whatever direction or condition so you can leave notes for rescuers or write notes on locations of water sources and other things. Plus, tactical pens looks like an ordinary pen, so you can take out even at the office without making people nervous.


6. Multitool

 

Multitools are the jack-of-all-trades of EDC tools which you can carry with you every day. It is a versatile and portable hand tool that combines various individual functions in a single unit. There are versions of models that include a combination of the following:

  • Can opener
  • Wire stripper
  • Bottle opener
  • Reamer
  • Knife blader
  • Toothpick
  • Folding scissors
  • Tweezers

Multitool varies in size with the smallest having the size of a key or credit card and others which needs to be carried in a trouser pocket or a bell-mounted pouch.


7. Wallet

 

Wallet is an everyday carry item. This is where you put your cash and identification cards and licenses. You simply can’t leave home without this.


8. Watch

Once upon a time, watches are just accessories you wear in order to tell time. Nowadays, a watch still tells time, however, some watches have been upgraded to something more helpful in dire situations.

Like smartphones, the technological world also gave birth to smartwatches. They function like smartphones, although with limited capabilities. Nevertheless, these smartwatches are helpful with advancements such as GPS tracking, maps and even for communications.

Also, modern watches are designed to withstand extreme conditions and environments. Some are built to be waterproof while some can endure cold, humidity and heavy rain and still work completely fine.


9. Paracord

Parachute cord or most commonly called as Paracord, is a widely used tool in every day carry situations. Paracords are very strong, light and will not rot under any circumstances. It is woven from the same nylon cord used in parachutes since WWII and is proven useful in all kinds of situations from making a trail to fishing for dinner.

A paracord at your disposal can come handy if you need to tie an emergency shelter down or splint a broken bone. It comes as a bracelet or other wearable items.


10. Water Bottles and Purifier

 

Water is important on our everyday lives and more importantly for survival. With bottled water, you have reserve water for drinking so you won’t get thirsty. Ideally, you can buy a durable water bottle that can endure harsh environments in case you got stranded in the middle of nowhere. Also, with a purifier at your disposal,  you don’t have to worry about running out of water in the wild. You can have a personal water filter and few water purification tablets that can make any water drinkable.
